Good tile work is decided before any thinset is mixed. Where the first full tile lands determines where the cuts fall, whether the grout lines run true across a doorway, and whether the course at eye level is a full tile or a two-inch sliver. We dry-lay and snap our lines first, work off the most visible sightline, and put the awkward cuts where the eye does not go.
